As the years go on, the Murray Darling River System’s condition has been increasingly affected and continues to drop to poor conditions.

Here are a few biological issues:

·         Fish and aquatic macro-invertebrates populations have decreased and are in poor condition.

·         Vegetation along the entire river is in poor condition.

·         Wetland quality has significantly reduced.

·         10% of the whole river length is found to be impaired.

Here are a few environmental and sustainability issues.

·         Nutrients and suspended sediment loads are excessive and increasing towards the mouth of the river.

·         Salinity is increasing due to rises in the groundwater level in the river.

·         Several floodplains have lost its connection.

·         Bank erosion occurs more and more often.

·         Around 95% of the river length is found to have an environmental condition that was degraded. 30% was substantially modified from the original condition.

·         Unseasonal flooding of wetlands.

·         The drought.

·         Chemical pollution in the water.
